June 1 & 2
Receive the Holy Spirit! Encounter Christ!
Go to the Ends of the Earth! (cf. Acts 1:8)
Dear Friends,
Happy Easter!
My wish for all of us is that we are not just celebrating a religious ritual or the cultural practices and traditions each one of us associates with this season. The word "Easter", of course, is first and foremost a reference to the arrival of the season of Spring, and only by application is it a reference to the central mystery of the faith: "Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again." It is my prayer and wish for our whole church that this Easter we will experience a personal encounter with the Resurrected Christ, along with the transforming effect of such a significant meeting in the daily unfolding of our lives.
Using Our Talents - Building Our Strengths
Our 2012 Archdiocesan Stewardship Conference will be held, from May 11-12, at the Sacred Heart School (5820 Spring Garden Road). This conference offers an ideal opportunity to reflect on how to maximize our talents and strengths in order to become more actively engaged members of the body of Christ.
O God, Shepherd and ruler of all the faithful, look favourably on your servant Benedict, whom you have set at the head of your Church as her shepherd; grant, we pray, that by word and example he may be of service to those over whom he presides so that, together with the flock entrusted to his care, he may come to everlasting life.

Our first assembly of the People of God devoted to the New Evangelization takes place on June 1 & 2, 2012 at St. Mary's University in Halifax, NS. This event is designed for adults (aged 18 and up). Young people are invited to attend Steubenville Atlantic on August 3-5, 2012. The goal of this event is to bring together the community of faith within the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth to experience Christ through liturgy, Word, sacrament, community and witness, and to inspire and motivate us to share that experience in our parishes and families and to the ends of the earth.

Mass of Chrism
The Cathedral was full for the first Mass of Chrism in our new Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth on Tuesday of Holy Week!! With pastors and people from parishes in all six regions gathered, this annual celebration at the end of Lent physically expressed the unity of the entire archdiocese. More than seventy priests renewed their promises and the sacred oils were blessed and sent to all communities for the celebrations of the sacraments this year. Thank you to all for coming, for the sense and spirit of unity, the good spirit that was so clearly expressed, and the high level of participation of our priests and deacons.
The Easter Triduum begins on Holy Thursday with the Evening Mass of the Lord's Supper, continues on Good Friday with the Celebration of the Passion of the Lord and on Holy Saturday with meditation at the tomb of the Lord, and culminates in the Feast of the Resurrection of the Lord at the Easter Vigil in the night and Easter Sunday Mass during the day.
The New Evangelization is a call to action; a call to me. It means that I will take up the charge as priest, prophet and king. I will not just think about it or talk about it or even only pray about it. I will do it. I will continue to learn and grow in my faith, so that I can be grounded in the truth, so that I am ready to share the Good News and answer the questions that inevitably come. I will go to Mass, and not just on Sundays, and not just when I feel like it. I will go to receive Christ, to be nourished and strengthened by Him and to be encouraged by my brothers and sisters.
TUESDAY APRIL 3 12:15pm
Saint Mary's Cathedral Basilica in Halifax
The Chrism Mass is one of the final preparations for the great celebration of the Easter Triduum, as the priests of the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth renew their priestly promises, and the oils for the celebrations of the sacraments are blessed and given to the parishes.
The six Regional Evangelization Councils met together for the first time on Friday and Saturday this week. They gathered in Halifax with Archbishop Mancini and their Regional Episcopal Vicars. Archbishop Mancini described their mission this way: "I hope that hearts and minds will be open to the power of the Spirit so that we may be equipped for the task set before us.
REGIONAL EVANGELIZATION COUNCILS FORMING
Many people have expressed excitement for the mission of the New Evangelization. Yet, beyond the initial excitement the question of "How do we do this?" remains.
Send a note to tell us what is new for you.
Learning a new method
Koinonia, our diocesan adult faith development program, is taking the first steps to engage with groups across the archdiocese through video technology and online learning. The first tests were carried out during the early March sessions.
WHEN we understand New Evangelization as creating the conditions and providing the opportunities for fresh experiences of the power and presence of the Holy Spirit in our communities of faith to enable a more effective proclamation of the gospel and a personal encounter of Jesus Christ, THEN we can look forward to the opportunity to convert the experience of our church from one of discontent and disappointment to one of hope and new life.
Fifty people gathered recently with Archbishop Mancini and the Episcopal Vicars at St. Vincent de Paul Parish. They worked together Friday evening and Saturday on the potential for new ardour, new methods and new expressions in the New Evangelization.
On the First Sunday of Lent, more than 300 people gathered in the afternoon at Saint Mary's Cathedral Basilica. Several were preparing to be baptized, confirmed and receive the Eucharist for the first time at Easter, some were those already baptized who have chosen to become part of the Roman Catholic Church. They were all accompanied by members of their parish and their family who had come to pray for them. Archbishop Mancini listened as they spoke of the experience of coming to know the Lord and beginning to find their place in the church. In the name of the Church, he elected those who will be baptized, and encouraged those already baptized who are preparing to come into full communion.
