That’s the theme verse. It’s in the song. It’s on the logo. We’ll hear it over and over again over the coming months and hear it over and over again at the conference itself. When I hear this phrase: “The Word Became Flesh” I have to ask “why” and even “so what”? Learn more, click the title above.
In our youth blog we focused on some teachings from Bob Rice which revolve around this year’s theme. However, by setting up the article the way we did we also gave you, as group leaders, some tools to help prepare your group for the conference.
Why John, whatever do you mean?
As it is written the article could also form the outline for a preparation night which focuses on two great teaching moments:
1) An introduction to the Catechism of the Catholic Church
2) Breaking open the parts and pieces of our theme
A sample meeting using the article and YouTube videos we provided might look something like this
"The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father." John 1:14.

Ironically, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, in bold letters, asks this very question: “Why Did the Word Become Flesh?”How cool is that? How often do you go looking for an answer about the Church and find it right in the Catechism in black and white (or black and that pretty brown background if you use it online at http://www.vatican.va).Actually, it happens quite often.I encourage you to crack the spine on your copy of the Catechism and use the handy topical index.
For a funny story about reading the Catechism check out this YouTube video from Bob Rice.
Bob Rice wasn't the only one speaking at our launch parties, we also had the privledge to have Archbishop Anthony Mancini, Archbishop of Halifax join us at our launch party in Halifax and the Bishop of Saint John, Bishop Robert Harris, join us in Saint John, New Brunswick. The presence of the bishops at our conference is one thing that makes it unique among all other Steubenville conferences. They spend the whole weekend with us because we are important to them and to the Church. When the leaders of a place take time to spend with you it's either because you're a problem or someone worth being around. In the case of young people it's definitely because we're worth it. This two and a half minute clip has Archbishop Mancini reminding us how Christian community like that found at Steubenville Atlantic can help change the world.
Thanks to everyone who attened our 2010 launch parties. We were able to share the message of the Gospel and extend an invitation to the conference to over 400 people this weekend. We hope to see all of you and your friends this summer.
We have a few pictures that John captured on his phone. If you have more feel free to upload them to the Facebook page: Steubenville Atlantic
